Jewelry Care Guide

How to Care for Your Jewelry

Every Jewelrybymaetrix piece is crafted with care. Follow these guidelines to keep your jewelry looking its best for as long as possible.

Gold-Plated Jewelry

Gold-plated jewelry features a base metal (such as brass or copper) coated with a thin layer of real gold. With proper care, your plating can last 1–2 years or longer.

Water Exposure

  • Remove before swimming — chlorine in pools and salt in ocean water accelerate plating wear.
  • Remove before showering — repeated exposure to water and soap weakens the plating over time.
  • Pat dry immediately if your piece gets wet; never soak it.

Perfume & Chemicals

  • Apply perfume, hairspray, lotion, and sunscreen before putting on your jewelry — never after.
  • Avoid contact with household cleaners, hand sanitizer, and chlorine bleach.

Cleaning

  • Wipe gently with a soft, lint-free or microfiber cloth after each wear.
  • For light cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth, then dry thoroughly.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths, ultrasonic cleaners, or silver/jewelry polishing solutions on gold-plated pieces — these strip the plating.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Keep each piece in a separate pouch or compartment to prevent scratching.
  • Avoid storing in the bathroom, where steam and moisture cause faster tarnishing.

Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver (92.5% pure silver) is durable but naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to air and moisture.

Water Exposure

  • Remove before swimming, showering, and hot tubs.
  • Avoid contact with saltwater and chlorinated water.

Perfume & Chemicals

  • Put jewelry on last — after applying perfume, lotion, and cosmetics.
  • Remove before using cleaning products or working with chemicals.

Cleaning

  • Use a soft silver polishing cloth to gently buff away tarnish.
  • For deeper cleaning, use a mild soap and warm water solution, scrub lightly with a soft toothbrush, rinse well, and dry completely.
  • Dry thoroughly after any cleaning — moisture left on silver promotes tarnish.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight bag or anti-tarnish pouch when not in use.
  • Add a small anti-tarnish strip to your storage pouch for extra protection.
  • Keep pieces separate to avoid scratching.

General Tips for All Jewelry

  • Last on, first off — put your jewelry on after getting dressed and remove it before undressing.
  • Remove jewelry before exercising, doing dishes, gardening, or any activity that involves sweat or moisture.
  • Avoid sleeping in your jewelry to prevent bending, tangling, or scratching.
  • Inspect clasps and settings regularly and have repairs done promptly to avoid losing stones or breakage.
